Direct cremation vs attended funeral: what's the difference?
Last updated 30 April 2026
Direct cremation and an attended funeral are the two headline options every UK funeral director is required to publish prices for. They serve very different purposes, and the price gap between them is wide.
The median direct cremation in the UK currently costs £1,545, based on 2,846 published Standardised Price Lists. An attended funeral typically costs several times that — and that figure excludes third-party fees like the cremation fee and clergy charges.
Side-by-side
Direct cremation
- Unattended — no service, no procession, no mourners present.
- Cremation fee is bundled into the published price.
- Simple coffin; ashes returned to the family afterwards.
- Typical price ranges from below £1,000 to around £2,000.
- Suits families holding a separate memorial later.
Attended funeral
- Service at a crematorium, place of worship, or other venue.
- Hearse, mourners’ cars, formal coffin handling.
- Published price is funeral director’s charges only.
- Third-party fees — cremation fee, doctors’, clergy — paid on top.
- Suits families wanting a single, gathered farewell.
How to choose
Three questions help most families decide between the two:
- Will there be a gathering? If yes, you can still choose direct cremation and hold the gathering separately. If you want the gathering and the cremation in one event, choose an attended funeral.
- Is travel a factor? Direct cremation centralises logistics. An attended funeral typically requires the local family to travel to the crematorium on a fixed date.
- What was the person’s wish? Many people now leave a clear preference; if not, the published prices and the structure above are usually enough to settle the question.
A note on what’s in the headline price
One reason direct cremation looks much lower-cost than the attended figure is that the published direct-cremation price already includes the cremation fee paid to the crematorium. The attended-funeral figure does not — that fee is shown separately as a third-party disbursement, typically £900–£1,200 depending on the crematorium. Always add disbursements when comparing the two on a like-for-like basis.
