Co-op funeral plans: prices, options and how they compare

Co-op Funeralcare offers five prepaid plans. The direct cremation plan is the lowest-cost; the Simple, Bronze, Silver and Gold plans cover an attended funeral with increasing levels of service, transport and coffin quality:

• Direct Cremation plan — from around £1,650. An unattended cremation with collection, care, the cremation and return of ashes; no service.
• Simple, Bronze, Silver and Gold — attended funeral plans, typically from around the high £2,000s up to the low £4,000s depending on the tier.

You can pay in full, over 6 or 12 months at no extra charge, or in instalments over 2–25 years (which carry additional charges), and Co-op members receive a small discount. A plan is only good value if its price is close to what the funeral it covers costs today. Funeral Cost Index captures Co-op Funeralcare’s at-need prices from its published CMA Standardised Price Lists, which gives a like-for-like benchmark: the median Co-op direct cremation is £1,240 (from £1,240), and the median Co-op attended-funeral director’s charge is £3,265 across 492 branches with captured prices.

So Co-op’s direct cremation plan at around £1,650 can be weighed directly against Co-op’s at-need direct cremation median of £1,240 — the plan’s premium over the current price is what you are paying to fix the cost and remove the arranging burden. Co-op Funeralcare’s plans are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, which since July 2022 has required every UK plan provider to be authorised, to hold customers’ money in a ring-fenced trust or insurance policy, and to offer Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection. Buying a Co-op plan fixes the price now and spares the family from arranging and paying later; paying at need is settled from the estate or savings when the time comes, often from the deceased’s own bank account before probate.
